Busy Days . . .

We are very busy this week preparing for Easter this weekend – cleaning up the house and the yard, planting flowers and vegetables, shopping for clothing, shoes, food and eggs, playing outside, practicing songs for the children’s choir, not to mention filling lots of plastic eggs with candy for our big Easter egg hunts on Sunday.

All of this busyness doesn’t leave much time to blog – so I will be taking a break until next week.

I hope that you are all having a special week and will celebrate our Lord’s resurrection on Sunday with joy and thanksgiving!

Be back next week ~

Blessings,
Nancy

Thankful Thursday ~ March 25

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
I Thessalonians 5:16-18

This weekend is my daughter Sarah’s 12th birthday. My thankful thoughts today center around the blessing she is to us ~

~ I am thankful for Sarah’s sweet spirit.

~ I am thankful for her sensitivity – although challenging at times – she feels things deeply (like her mom).

~ I am thankful for her generosity – she loves to give gifts and do special things for people.

~ I am thankful for Sarah’s gift of teaching – she is a wonderful teacher to the younger children when she frequently sits down with them to share her knowledge.

~ I am thankful that she loves to spend time with Mom – her greatest pleasure is to spend a “girl day” out with me.

~ I am thankful for her lovely smile and happy laugh.

~ I am thankful for her love for the Lord and her desire to walk with Him.

~ I am thankful for all of the lessons that the Lord teaches me through my daughter.

Quilt Progress

Thought I’d update you on my progress with my Star Medallion quilt. This is a large quilt made from reproduction prints in many different colors and patterns. I am hand piecing it, which I have so much enjoyed so far. I took some pictures this afternoon so that I could share my progress with you. This is the center star of the quilt showing the whole center block and then a close up of just the star -

These are the four “Churn Dash” blocks that are in the quilt -

There are four “Log Cabin” blocks – one will be in each corner of the quilt -

Here is a close-up of one of the blocks -

I am now piecing “Cup and Saucer” blocks. I have made half-triangles and many flying geese, which are pressed now and ready to be sewn together to make the completed blocks -

I’ve posted this before, but here is a picture from my pattern of what the quilt will look like when finished -

I look forward each day to sitting down in the evening in front of my “Waltons” dvd and sewing on this quilt. I’ll post more pictures later as I complete different parts – Checkerboard blocks will be next!

Have a nice evening!

Blessings,
Nancy

The Simple Woman’s Daybook ~ March 22

Here is my Daybook entry for today ~

Outside my window. . .Spring has returned with bright sunshine and warmer temperatures – still much snow left from yesterday, but the birds are singing and hunting for food, and the fruit trees are in bloom, which is an odd sight surrounded by snow!
~~~~~~~~~~
I am thinking. . .about the consequences of the health bill.
~~~~~~~~~~
From the learning room. . .back to schoolwork (not that any of us are ready for spring break to be over) – only 2 more months until we break for summer, and there are a number of things to work on. This week the youngers will be learning about ants, ladybugs, and bees. The olders are finishing up space rocks, and continuing with George Washington and the Revolutionary War. Laura is reading through “George Washington’s World” by Genevieve Foster; Tommy is really enjoying “Johnny Tremain” by Esther Forbes; and Sarah is beginning a novel on Betsy Ross by Ann Weil.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am thankful for. . .the end of winter and renewing of spring.
~~~~~~~~~~
From the kitchen. . .Stouffer’s Macaroni and Cheese, green beans, applesauce, and chocolate cake.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am wearing. . .pale pink polo shirt and jeans.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am creating. . .working on “Cup and Saucer” blocks in my Star Medallion quilt.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am going. . .to be reading up on blackberry pruning, so that we can get ours ready for the new season.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am reading. . .“Grace Based Parenting” by Tim Kimmel, and the April “Country Living” magazine.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am hoping. . .that the ground warms up quickly so that we can get our plants out in it.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am hearing. . .pretty quiet as some of the children are still sleeping, but a few of the little ones are watching a Spongebob dvd in the living room.
~~~~~~~~~~
Around the house. . .a temporary garden is set up on the table in the craft room – we had to bring in all of the new garden plants that we bought to protect them from the freeze; party remnants from the boys’ sleepover party this past weekend; a new picnic table to build for under the trees in the front yard – a perfect picnic spot.
~~~~~~~~~~
One of my favorite things. . .pink flowers.
~~~~~~~~~~
A few plans for the rest of the week. . .school, gardening, sewing, Keepers Club meeting (Laura teaching!), ice skating, and celebrating Sarah’s 12th birthday.
~~~~~~~~~~
Here is a picture thought I am sharing. . .

Garden plants waiting for warm soil – tomatoes, bell peppers, dill, jalapeno peppers, and, of course, lovely flowers.

Sugar Snow!

“In the morning the house was warm from the stove, but when Laura looked out of the window she saw that the ground was covered with soft, thick snow. All along the branches of the trees the snow was piled like feathers, and it lay in mounds along the top of the rail fence, and stood up in great, white balls on top of the gate-posts.
Pa came in, shaking the soft snow from his shoulders and stamping it from his boots.
“It’s a sugar snow,” he said.
Laura put her tongue quickly to a little bit of the white snow that lay in a fold of his sleeve. It was nothing but wet on her tongue, like any snow. She was glad that nobody had seen her taste it.
“Why is it a sugar snow, Pa?” she asked him, but he said he didn’t have time to explain now. He must hurry away, he was going to Grandpa’s.

After supper, Pa took them on his knees as he sat before the fire, and told them about his day at Grandpa’s, and the sugar snow. . . .

“It’s called a sugar snow, because a snow this time of year means that men can make more sugar. You see, this little cold spell and the snow will hold back the leafing of the trees, and that makes the longer run of sap. When there’s a long run of sap, it means that Grandpa can make enough maple sugar to last all the year, for common every day. When he takes his furs to town, he will not need to trade for much store sugar. He will get only a little store sugar, to have on the table when company comes.”

“Grandpa must be glad there’s a sugar snow,” Laura said.

“Yes,” Pa said, “he’s very glad. He’s going to sugar off again next Monday, and he says we must all come.”
(From “Little House in the Big Woods” by Laura Ingalls Wilder)

Grandpa was glad and so are we! We woke up this morning to our very own sugar snow. We were expecting 1-2 inches, but ended up with 9 inches measured on the picnic table! Here are some pictures I took first thing this morning –

My patio garden – good thing we haven’t planted it yet! -

My giant Rosemary plant is under here somewhere -

We don’t have any maple trees, so we won’t be making sugar, but we are going to be making molasses candy with our snow today. Sarah has been wanting to do this all season, but we were always a step behind the snow or out of molasses, and it didn’t happen, but today it will!

Ma was busy all day long, cooking good things for Christmas. She baked salt-rising bread and rye’n'Injun bread, and Swedish crackers, and a huge pan of baked beans, with salt pork and molasses. She baked vinegar pies and dried-apple pies, and filled a big jar with cookies, and she let Laura and Mary lick the cake spoon.
One morning she boiled molasses and sugar together until they made a thick syrup, and Pa brought in two pans of clean, white snow from outdoors. Laura and Mary each had a pan, and Pa and Ma showed them how to pour the dark syrup in little streams on to the snow.
They made circles, and curlicues, and squiggledy things, and these hardened at once and were candy. Laura and Mary might eat one piece each, but the rest was saved for Christmas Day.”

(Also from “Little House in the Big Woods” by Laura Ingalls Wilder)

Church has been cancelled this morning, and the children are slowly waking up. They will certainly be wanting to head outside soon, so I will say good-bye for now!

Be back again soon ~

Blessings,
Nancy

Welcome Spring!

Tomorrow is the official first day of Spring! Not to be dismissed too quickly, winter has decided to leave reluctantly as the forecast for the first day of Spring here is calling for a 50% chance of snow overnight! Well, it won’t dampen my spirits any, because the following day it will be sunny and 69 degrees again. So, we’ll endure one cold day, because, even though winter may rant and rave – it’s days are coming to a close.

We’re gearing up for planting around here. Jeff has purchased many flowers for the pots and baskets (which will live inside until the snow passes), and we will be buying soil, seeds, and vegetable plants this weekend, as well.

I hope your first day of Spring will bring you sunshine!

Have a wonderful weekend ~

Blessings,
Nancy

St. Patrick’s Day

An Old Irish Blessing
May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life’s passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!
(found at Island Ireland)

We will be having our traditional green meal for dinner tonight – Broccoli Rice Casserole, Lime Jell-o, and St. Patrick’s Day cookies -

I will be reading the history of St. Patrick to the children today. You can find the history, as well as lots of great ideas for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day here.

We will also be making shamrocks using these supplies -

I will close with another Irish prayer that is . . .

Said in the morning when rising
Christ be with me,
be after me,
be before me,
and be at my right and left hand.
May everything I do be for Christ.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone!

Blessings,
Nancy
