The Simple Woman’s Daybook ~ February 22, 2016

"/

Here is my Daybook entry for today ~

Outside my window. . . I noticed some robins in the yard a little while ago, stopping for a snack on their northerly flight home, many patches of green grass springing up, dandelions and a few other wildflowers are making an appearance as well.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am thinking. . .about menus for the week.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am thankful. . .for God’s love, grace and mercy in my life.
~~~~~~~~~~
In my kitchen. . .a busy evening with people coming and going tonight, so I may pick up some tacos for dinner.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am wearing. . .navy gathered shirt and sweater, blue jeans
~~~~~~~~~~
I am creating. . .still working on my Varsity quilt, although I am also eyeing a new Sweetwater flower mini quilt kit that I just received in the mail.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am reading. . .I just finished “Dana’s Valley” by Janette Oke and Laurel Oke Logan. I really loved this book! It was the first contemporary Oke book I’ve read and it was so compelling and engaging as I walked with the Walsh family as they dealt with various trials and tragedies in the life of their family, especially the serious illness of one of their children.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am hoping. . .to finally be able to shake this cold bug that I’ve been battling for weeks. I thought it was done, but then it came back for a little visit this past weekend.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am wondering. . .how the home appraisal we had done this morning will turn out. We are in the process of refinancing our mortgage and are hoping for a good value on the house.
~~~~~~~~~~
In the homeschool room. . .Benjamin Franklin, moths, “Pilgrim’s Progress”, “Happy Hollisters”, Astronomy, Laura Ingalls Wilder, the human body, “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”, and “Alice in Wonderland” are some of the things we are studying this week.
~~~~~~~~~~
Around the house. . .everything’s nice and clean after our visit this morning from the home appraiser (enjoy it while it lasts!), kids dancing in the living room to the WiiU game “Just Dance” – so fun to watch them all do this together!
~~~~~~~~~~
In my garden. . .it’s time to pick up some onion sets and get them planted out in the big garden this week. I bought a new garden journal to plan out my gardens for the year – I always look forward to doing this!
~~~~~~~~~~
A favorite quote for today. . .“For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” – 2 Corinthians 4:18b
~~~~~~~~~~
One of my favorite things. . .rustic farmhouse style decorating, especially Joanna Gaines inspired rooms and pieces.
~~~~~~~~~~
A picture thought for today. . .

Last year’s onion plants happily growing in their garden box – time to plant this year’s crop in the next week or so!

The Simple Woman’s Daybook ~ July 21, 2015

Here is my Daybook entry for today ~

Outside my window. . .a hot summer day! Cicadas are buzzing, a slight breeze is blowing, and the pool looks very inviting from my window, although it will have to wait until later in the day. The girls (chickens, not humans) are scratching around the yard, looking for a tasty morsel.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am thinking. . .about a plan for dinner tonight.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am thankful. . .for the cool air-conditioning on these hot days.
~~~~~~~~~~
In my kitchen. . .still deciding what to cook tonight, but Michael has requested cake for dessert, so that’s a starting point!
~~~~~~~~~~
I am wearing. . .lavender polo and navy capris.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am creating. . .finished the quilting on my small lake quilt – ready for binding today.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am reading. . .still reading Tumtum & Nutmeg, although I haven’t picked it up in the last few days. Perusing the new McCalls Quilting magazine – there is a beautiful red & white quilt in it called “Strawberries and Cream”.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am hoping. . .to get by several local quilt stores this week and check out their lovely new offerings.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am wondering. . .how Rowan is going to get along with his little doggy cousin, Bruce, who is coming to stay for a few days this week – it will be quite interesting, I’m sure!
~~~~~~~~~~
In the homeschool room. . .I am assessing which Math books I need to get ordered for the coming school year.
~~~~~~~~~~
Around the house. . .rather quiet for the moment – youngers watching a movie, playing Minecraft on the computer, laundry is running, I am in my room getting ready to enjoy some time with my quilts with Macey kitty (my little quilting buddy), who is settling in at the end of the bed to nap.
~~~~~~~~~~
In my garden. . .lots of watering is needed these days to keep what’s left alive and well.
~~~~~~~~~~
A favorite quote for today. . .“A soul redeemed demands a life of praise.” – Cowper
~~~~~~~~~~
One of my favorite things. . .My friend Lisa’s homemade dill pickles (pictured below). These are the best pickles I have ever tasted and I always get several jars from her each year when she sells them to raise money for church mission trips.
~~~~~~~~~~
A picture thought for today. . .

BB

Lisa’s delicious pickles ~ we have already finished off 3 of these jars!

The Simple Woman’s Daybook ~ July 13, 2015

Here is my Daybook entry for today ~

Outside my window. . . the early evening shadiness is creeping over the yard.  The kids are swimming in the pool while I sit and watch while writing.  Rowan (the dog) is playing frisbee with the kids in the pool – he drops it in the water and then waits for them to throw it  – he lives for this game!  It is cooling off a little from the upper 90’s of the day, and a nice gentle breeze is blowing, making it possible for me to stay out of the pool for the moment.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am thinking. . . about possibilities for fun places to go while on vacation next month.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am thankful. . .for our pool and the rest and fun it provides during these hot Texas summers.
~~~~~~~~~~
In my kitchen. . .We cooked out Cheeseburgers on the grill tonight and roasted corn on the cob, served with baked beans and grilled onions for the burgers. Red, white, and blue M & M cookies for dessert.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am wearing. . .light blue and white swirly peasant top with navy capris.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am creating. . .doing some hand stitching on the applique on my Farm Fresh quilt and on my red embroidery quilt. I picked up some thread this past weekend, so I can begin quilting my small summer lake quilt.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am reading. . .a cute novel I checked out from the children’s section of the library last week – I couldn’t resist it – it looked so appealing. It is called “Tumtum & Nutmeg” by David Murray. It’s an adorable little mouse tale, with sweet characters. What can I say? I love children’s books!
~~~~~~~~~~
I am hoping. . .that the new daily system that I started today with the kids will work out well. More on this later.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am wondering. . .at the beauty and intricacy of God’s amazing creation.
~~~~~~~~~~
In the homeschool room. . .summer break is in full swing. I’ve done a little thinking about next year’s plans, but my thoughts are still ruminating. Truth be told – one of my favorite activities of the summer is floating around the pool deep in thought about plans for the new school year. I do some of my best thinking that way! My kids think I’m crazy! 🙂
~~~~~~~~~~
Around the house. . .Jeff is enjoying the All-Stars Home Run Derby in the living room, dinner leftovers are still sitting out in the kitchen, Sarah is finishing off Season 5 of Downton Abby, and the kitties are enjoying the fact that the dog is outside away from them for a little while.
~~~~~~~~~~
In my garden. . .Jeff pulled the onions and they are laid out on the picnic table to dry. Green tomatoes are growing – the chickens have been helping themselves to the ones at the bottom of the bushes. Peppers are doing well. Most of the big garden ended up being a bust this year – probably due to the overabundance of spring rains that we had.
~~~~~~~~~~
A favorite quote for today. . .“My plea is ~ Let me be a woman, holy through and through, asking for nothing but what God wants to give me, receiving with both hands and with all my heart whatever that is.” – Elisabeth Elliot
~~~~~~~~~~
One of my favorite things. . .the pretty white lights on the white picket pool fence – we turn them on when we are out swimming in the evenings – such a lovely sight!
~~~~~~~~~~

Here is my Daybook entry for today ~

Outside my window. . . a lush green landscape has taken over the world, dotted here and there with pops of color from flowers blooming around the yard.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am thinking. . .that my role as a parent is not to change my children’s hearts – only the Lord can do that – but, to speak truth to them and hold them accountable for the decisions they make.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am thankful. . .for the sunny days that we’ve had this past week after so much prior rain.
~~~~~~~~~~
In my kitchen. . .omelettes and chocolate chip muffins for dinner tonight.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am wearing. . .navy and white striped shirt, denim capris, and pretty spring Jamberry nails.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am creating. . .a nautical/beachy small quilt – all pieced and layered – ready to be basted and quilted.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am reading. . .my Bible.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am hoping. . .that the chickens will stay out of my newly planted gardens and that my seeds will be very productive this year.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am wondering. . .what fun and exciting new books, games, and curriculum I will find at this weekend’s Homeschool Bookfair.
~~~~~~~~~~
In the homeschool room. . .lessons winding down as we only have two more weeks in our school year. We’re finishing up our books and working on getting Tommy graduated!
~~~~~~~~~~
Around the house. . .kitties in windows, dishes waiting to be rinsed and loaded, children chatting, laundry running, dining table overloaded with lots of stuff.
~~~~~~~~~~
In my garden. . .I finally got seeds planted yesterday, although the tomato, onion and pepper plants have been in the ground a little while now. I also planted some new herbs in the herb garden – more to come soon on this year’s plantings.
~~~~~~~~~~
A favorite quote for today. . .“Your spriritual weakness, inability, and immaturity are not things to be afraid of. Your delusions of spriritual strength are a much greater danger.” – Paul David Tripp
~~~~~~~~~~
One of my favorite things. . .my new blue and white spattered enamelware bowl I found at an antique mall last week. It will be so pretty holding a nice green salad I’m thinking.
The Simple Woman’s Daybook ~ February 17, 2014
So excited to rejoin the Daybook again! Here is my Daybook entry for today ~
Outside my window. . .blue skies and 70 degrees, a cool breeze blowing, birds chirping happily, Michael and Anna picking up sticks all around the property (not so happily), Jeff planting onion sets in the big garden and the little ladies (chickens) pecking around the yard.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am thinking. . .while I rock on the front porch about plans and rejoicing in this beautiful weather.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am thankful for. . .my little ladies, who are so much fun to watch, and who bless us with fresh eggs every day.
~~~~~~~~~~
In the kitchen. . .Pick your own Soup night and Cheesy Garlic Biscuits – and a cherry pie for dessert in honor of George Washington.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am wearing. . .light blue t-shirt, navy sweater, and jeans.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am creating. . .working on my Tree of Life quilt while watching the Olympics most nights and in small snatches of moments when I can. I’m also stitching on a “Farmish” Jelly Roll Race quilt on the machine. I just joined a new block of the month at my local quilt shop that features primitive houses with a split rail fence border, so I’ll be putting together the first block this week.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am reading. . .school books, quilt patterns, and my Bible.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am hoping. . .that David will feel better soon. His tummy was sick last night. 😦
~~~~~~~~~~
I am looking forward to. . .watching the Olympics for one more week!
~~~~~~~~~~
From the Learning Room. . .Farmer Boy, Greek Mythology, C.S. Lewis, Sea Life, Bible lessons, and more along with our basic subjects. Anna and I just finished “A Little Princess” (Sara Crewe) and are already missing it – such a wonderful book!
~~~~~~~~~~
Around the house. . .David laying on the couch with soup and Gatorade watching Despicable Me 2, dishwasher running, Valentine balloons and flowers, kitties snoozing on my bed.
~~~~~~~~~~
A favorite quote for today. . .“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” – Isaiah 26:3
~~~~~~~~~~
One of my favorite things. . .watching the Winter Olympics!
~~~~~~~~~~
A few plans for the rest of the week. . .Ladies Bible Study, Church Small Group meeting, sewing, enjoying the great outdoors and my front porch with the mild temperatures we’re experiencing, planting onion sets in the garden (Jeff’s got a head start on that!), filling the bird feeders, and the final Upwards Basketball/Cheerleading games for the season for Michael, Anna, and David.

The Simple Woman’s Daybook ~ October 28

Yes, I know. . . I said I’d be back soon. . . and it’s been longer than soon. But, here I am now, and what better way is there to jump start the blog than by joining back into the Simple Woman’s Daybook! So, towards that end, here is my Daybook entry for today ~

Outside my window. . .sunshine and cool/chilly weather – a lovely Fall day outside. A blanket of leaves is covering the front yard and pond area – one of my favorite sights each year. Jeff and a friend from church are playing in the mud, digging a giant hole under the foundation of the house. It is muddy because we have a water leak about a foot and a half in, under the side of the house – they are digging their way to the break and hopefully we will have it fixed soon!
~~~~~~~~~~
I am thinking. . .about plans for this week for home and school.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am thankful for. . .the blessing of our church family and their willingness to bless others with their skills and knowledge (especially when it comes to plumbing leaks!)
~~~~~~~~~~
In the kitchen. . .Nachos and Burritos tonight for dinner.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am wearing. . .pink sweater, white t-shirt and jeans with socks – too chilly for bare feet today!
~~~~~~~~~~
I am creating. . .more peace for myself by decluttering my home – a slow and sometimes overwhelming task. Also have many quilt projects ongoing – hope to get some pictures up soon.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am reading. . .working my way through Jennifer Chiaverini’s Elm Creek Quilts series, currently reading “Sonoma Rose”. I love this series, especially the historical novels.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am hoping. . .to make time for blogging on a more regular basis again!
~~~~~~~~~~
I am looking forward to. . .November starting this week – one of my favorite months of the year.
~~~~~~~~~~
In the learning room. . .lots of interesting lessons going on – I need to write a post about what everyone is studying this year. A few snippets from this week are Johnny Appleseed and apples, Civil War time period, Eric Liddell, Hobbits, Insects, and Math subjects ranging from learning to subtract up to Algebra.
~~~~~~~~~~
Around the house. . .all decorated for Fall (maybe a photo tour is called for), a few lingering coughs that don’t seem to want to leave, a kitchen counter full of mugs – hot chocolate season has begun again!
~~~~~~~~~~
A favorite quote for today. . .one that I often quote to a certain daughter (especially at Math time) – “Whether you think you can or think you can’t – you are right.” ~ Henry Ford.
~~~~~~~~~~
One of my favorite things. . .cool Fall evenings with a candle burning, hot chocolate poured, my favorite red quilt on my lap and a classic movie on the screen (usually “By the Light of the Silvery Moon” this time of year).
~~~~~~~~~~
A few plans for the rest of the week. . .school work, cleaning, sewing (I hope!), ice skating, library, our annual Fall Festival to attend, and celebrating Anna’s 9th birthday!
~~~~~~~~~~
A picture thought for today. . .

Yummy Autumn M&M cookies about ready to bake!

The Simple Woman’s Daybook ~ March 12

Here is my Daybook entry for today ~

Outside my window. . .A beautiful, beautiful day ~ especially welcome after the dark, rainy weekend we had. We are expecting temperatures in the 70’s all week. I am on the front porch enjoying it all; David is in his rain boots having a wonderful time jumping in puddles on the driveway – classic. The yard is very green and there is just a hint of green on the trees where baby leaves are springing forth. Blue skies and birds singing – I may be out here all day today.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am thinking. . .about school. I usually start analyzing about this time of year – how curriculums are working, how school and life are blending – thinking about whether to change things up a bit or leave them alone for next year.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am thankful for. . .my two younger teenagers – Tommy and Sarah – who are having birthdays this month – Tommy turning 15 and Sarah turning 14 – where do the years go?
~~~~~~~~~~
In the kitchen. . .cooking out Cheeseburgers on the grill tonight (a special request from Anna), with corn on the cob and garlic roasted potato wedges. I was thinking about baking something for dessert, but I don’t think I can bring myself to go inside to do it!
~~~~~~~~~~
I am wearing. . .pink shirt and denim capris.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am creating. . .journal pages for my daily journal; hoping to get some quilting in this week.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am reading. . .rereading “Pocketful of Pinecones” by Karen Andreola – one of my all time favorite books!
~~~~~~~~~~
I am hoping. . .to get some prep work on the garden done this week – it’s time to get things planted.
~~~~~~~~~~
I am looking forward to. . .dinner tonight – first cooked out burgers of the year!
~~~~~~~~~~
I am learning. . .about fresh garlic. I have only used it once in my life and my hands smelled for days, so I have been content to use garlic powder and salt for years, but I am wanting to start to use fresh, and so am educating myself on the best way to handle it and use it in my cooking – so thankful for the Internet whenever I need to learn something new.
~~~~~~~~~~
Around the house. . .roller skates, dishwasher and washing machine are loaded and running, fresh sheets are on my bed (a spring day like this just calls for fresh linens!), windows open to let in the fresh air – and so, kitties are sitting in those open windows.
~~~~~~~~~~
A favorite quote for today. . .“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me, you can do nothing.” -John 15:5
~~~~~~~~~~
One of my favorite things. . .folding clean laundry fresh out of the dryer.
~~~~~~~~~~
A few plans for the rest of the week. . .Spring Break! Spending as much time as possible outside, still thinking of fun things to do – maybe a picnic in the yard, a park trip, going out for ice cream. Gardening, sewing, reading and relaxing.
~~~~~~~~~~
A picture thought for today. . .
